General Advice and Tacitly Underlying Assignments - parts of our compact for learning

• Keller & Russell composed their text to present Latin vocabulary, forms, and syntax to new learners of the language. Their organization of topics can differ greatly from other textbooks with the same basic purpose: please understand you may find some connections made differently from what you've seen before. It's not a problem. Latin evolved as a living language long before its patterns started to be traced, grouped, and articulated. By bringing together your previous learning and different insights, ideally, we will all strengthen and extend our understanding.
• Chris Francese's Dickinson College Commentaries Latin Core Vocabulary represents one thousand words used the most commonly in Classical Latin texts. Scroll down to the section "Why Core Vocabulary" on the Core Vocabulary home-page for explanation. While review and new-work exercises in Keller & Russell will naturally feature vocabulary they prioritize - there will be a lot of overlap, and their Vocabulary Notes at the head of each chapter offer much interesting and valuable information, so do incorporate their lists in your studying - you will consolidate your own Latin vocabulary most profitably by focusing on the Latin Core Vocabulary first. As you read and work on exercises, flag unfamiliar words for yourself. Give them priority for memorization according to their frequency-rating. Work your way steadily along the list building proficiency.
• Use all Latin reading and exercises as an opportunity to consolidate vocabulary. Periodically generate forms as you review words, so you can recognize them at work in their natural environments.
• Use all Latin reading and exercises as an opportunity to consolidate syntax. Translation is a less important goal to us now than clearly understanding how sentences mean what you translate them as meaning. Think about how vocabulary, forms, and syntax come together. Periodically review the structures and principles you see operating in our passages.
• Especially when we discuss new grammatical concepts or ones you find counter-intuitive, pin down a working understanding, then come back to it later and make sure it still makes sense. If a concept stops making sense (and some will: they do it to all of us occasionally), ask questions.
• Think about one another's questions and how best they can be answered. Use the Forums to work together on review and new material. Both articulating your questions and offering your own answers give you valuable practice thinking about how language works to make meaning. It's a social enterprise. As you come to the same work from different backgrounds, you are one another's first & best resources. Just never outsource your thinking: make sure your understanding keeps on working for you.
