General description of the assignment

• In Item-Reports each student will
  • research one art-item we will be visiting as a class,
  • present to the group a 5-minute overview of its most important characteristics for purposes of our study, and,
  • on the day following the day of the in-class report (that is, on the Tuesday immediately after a report on a Monday, or on the Thursday immediately after a report on a Wednesday), by 4:30 pm, turn in to the instructor's mailbox at the JFRC a two-page, 12-point Times Roman doublespaced written version of the report.

Format and Content

• Each Item-Report (oral and written versions) should begin with a a concise statement of the work's date, its nature (what kind of a thing is it?), its material (what is it made out of?), and who is responsible for it (patron or artisan, as such information is known).
• Go on from the basic information to explain what about the work is important for a study of Art in the Roman World, and why. The work's importance may include, but is not necessarily limited to, its technical characteristics, its aesthetic qualities, and its relationship to its social and historical context.
  • In the oral presentation, discuss the specifics of the item's importance concretely, so all members of the class can learn clearly.
  • In the written version, annotate the sources on whose authority you are relying, so that a reader who's interested in the item can follow up your lead and learn more.
• Be concise, but be informative.
• In-class presentations of the item-reports will be scheduled in consultation with the instructor. Each student will complete two (2) item-reports, to be delivered on different days.
• The written version of the item-report is due by 4:30 pm on the day following the day of the in-class report (that is, on the Tuesday immediately after a report on a Mondays, or on the Thursday immediately after a report on a Wednesday), in the instructor's mailbox at the JFRC.
• The written version of the Item-report should extend for two pages (neither much less nor much more, say 1 3/4 - 2 1/2 pages) of 12-point doublespaced Times Roman.
• As goes without saying, all principles of Academic Integrity must be respected. In particular, take advantage of the guidance of Loyola Writing Program's advice about Use and Misuse of Source Materials, and consult the instructor if you have any questions.

Assessment

• Item-Reports will be graded on a full letter-scale for their informativeness: both their accuracy and the completeness and insight of their relevance.
