Policies and Assessment


Grades will be based on:

Contributions to Class (the value you add to everyone's learning: thoughtful questions, pertinent answers, insight, logic, substance, and always courtesy - more than mere attendance) 10%
Reading journal (a sample of your engaged, thoughtful, substantive response to assigned readings and class discussion since the last collection - usually every 5 meetings; cumulative average) 15%
Collaborative performances and associated short essays (cumulative average: performances 5%, essays 10%) 15%
First in-class examination 20%
Second in-class examination 20%
Final examination 20%
Penalty for excessive absences (see below) the Contribution component loses 2.5% for each absence falling within the definition of excess (see below)
The "midterm grade" will reflect the weighted average, pro-rated, of the components completed to date: participation, journal-entries, performances and essays to date, and the first in-class exam.
