Participation and other policies

• Class meetings
  • In connection with this course, we are partners in one another's learning. We each bring to this collaboration the wisdom of our own experience, both academic and otherwise. Foster a serious curiosity about Latin and language. Engage. Share your insights, side-lights, and questions. Work together on deepening understanding for us all. Build a collegial common space. Exchange ideas supportively. Respect the differences between our world and the ancient Mediterranean, and all the complexities that exist among us too. Allow all class-participants their right to voice opinions without fear of ridicule. Refrain from using harsh, dismissive, or profane language or seeming to endorse biased thinking, especially in comments directed at a classmate.
  • Active, engaged, thoughtful participation in classroom discussion and other activities helps enable you to succeed in this course. Missing class cheats you of the opportunity to enrich your understanding with the insights of others and to share your insights and questions with us. Courtesy displays your respect for others; giving your best to your classes also serves self-respect and self-interest.
  • Language skills grow by practice. If you miss work, you lose momentum, and lost momentum blocks your growth. Class is a forum both for getting and giving help, for exploring ideas in company with others who share your stake in the material. Your questions, as well as your reasoning toward answers, help us all to find our way through problems in an alien language. Be there. Prepared is better than unprepared, and prompt is better than late, but even unprepared attendance or late arrival is better than missing out completely - just don't disrupt others and their endeavors.
  • Distractions from learning are a problem for everyone, especially in our time together. Laptop computers, tablets, cell phones, recording equipment, iPods, and other electronic devices capable of being used for communication or entertainment may not be used in the classroom during class meetings for any purpose that does not support the work of the class, such as consulting texts or taking notes. Any other use will require them to be and to remain turned off and put away. Noisy or smelly food should not come into the classroom. Private conversations should be conducted outside of class time.
  • Standards of contribution include:

    Positive: raises questions from study-materials that generate intellectually rewarding discussion	in most meetings	in some meetings	in few meetings
    Positive: guides discussion to employ intellectually rewarding methods	in most meetings	in some meetings	in few meetings

    Negative: disrupts discussions with distraction or disrespect	never	once or twice, with apology	with some regularity or wantonness

  • If you are forced to miss class, please document the legitimacy of the absence, as soon as possible - in advance, if the absence is subject to scheduling.
  • Enrolling in a class is a non-trivial commitment. Keep it as a top priority. Legitimate absences (serious illness or other unavoidable crisis) should be documented in writing by the appropriate authority. Appointments should be scheduled outside the meeting-times of classes for which you are registered, with a fair margin for transit-time there or back again.
  • Regardless of the reason for an absence, you are responsible for the work the class does. It is not possible to make up in-class activities for any days you miss class, whether the absence as such is excused or unexcused.
  • Absences shall be defined as excessive, as follows:
    • Each unexcused absence beyond a total of three absences, excused or unexcused. That is, excused absences kill your budget of unexcused absences.
    • Repeated chronic lateness (more than 10 minutes) shall be counted as partial absences, as will early exits from class. Nevertheless, it is better to attend even part of a class than to miss it entirely. Do not, however, disturb your colleagues.
    • Absences will be totalled over the whole semester.
  • Always bring currently assigned texts with you to class meetings.
  • Come prepared to contribute constructively to class discussions.
  • The right to attend class meetings:
    • Loyola University's Undergraduate Studies Catalog provides that "No one is permitted to attend any class without first officially registering for that class."
    • Please be aware that not having satisfied a course's pre-requisites constitutes grounds for being withdrawn from that course at any time.
  • All principles regarding academic integrity apply to all classroom activities including discussion and collaborative work.
• Collaborative work
  • Active cooperation is expected of all students in every phase of collaborative endeavors. Everybody has a busy schedule and many obligations to juggle. You owe it to one another to plan together well in advance, as well as to carry out your responsibilities in your shared work.
  • It is not possible to make up in-class activities if you miss class that day, including collaborative presentations.
  • All principles regarding academic integrity apply to collaborative work just as they do to individual work.
• Written assignments
  • All written assignments are due physically in hand at the start of the class period for which they are assigned. Exceptions can be made only in extraordinary circumstances, for good and documented reasons. E-mail sometimes can provide an alternative means to submit written work, but can't get it in to form a basis of in-class collaboration. Check with your instructor in advance.
  • Please proofread rigorously, including grammar and spelling: intelligibility counts.
  • If academic writing in English, grammar, or spelling are not your strongest skills, seek support from the Writing Center's Online Writing Lab, or make an appointment for consultation with the Writing Center.

• Microquizzes, Quizzes, and Exams
  • Please keep yourself supplied with non-smeary pens or pencils and good erasers. Please also, to the extent possible, write legibly and spell correctly. I truly appreciate the care you exercise.
  • Exams can be rescheduled only for truly dire and documented reasons.
  • Loyola University's Undergraduate Studies Catalog provides that instructors do not have authority to re-schedule final examinations at all, under any circumstances. If your course-schedule results in your facing four (4) final exams on a single day, you may petition Assistant Dean Patricoski to have one (1) of the four re-scheduled on the authority of the College of Arts and Sciences.

• Academic Integrity, a.k.a. the life's blood of the intellect:
  • Any practice of academic dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism, obstructing the work of other students, etc.) perpetrated in this course will result in failure of the course. Do not do it.
  • For basic principles and definitions, see the subsection on "Academic Integrity" in the General Academic Standards and Regulations. The College of Arts and Sciences endorses and upholds this policy, as does the Department of Classical Studies. We also recommend you consult the helpful discussion of The Use and Misuse of Source Materials, provided by Loyola's Writing Program.
  • Plagiarism consists of implying or claiming that somebody else's words or ideas are your own: copying text and pasting it into work you submit as yours is blatant, but re-wording the original still involves appropriating someone else's thought. If you're not doing your own thinking, within the parameters of each assignment, you're not getting the experience that assignment was designed to give you. It's expected you will make use of sources as you do your thinking: always document them, whether you are referring to primary or secondary sources, whether you are quoting or paraphrasing. Re-submitting papers you have written yourself, in whole or in part, without full disclosure and explicit permission by all instructors concerned, also violates academic integrity. Guidance on the form of citations may be found, for example, in Turabian (also available via the tab "Citing Sources" in Loyola's Classical Studies Library Guide; this link will route you through the flagship login site if you are off-campus).
  • Loyola University requires that all instances of academic dishonesty must be reported to the chairperson of the department involved and to the academic Dean of the student's College.
  • Absolute adherence to the principles of academic honesty is important because learning is wholly personal: it only happens if you do it yourself. Your University record needs to match your real achievement.
• Copyright: Copyright law was designed to give rights to the creators of written work, artistic work, computer programs, and other creative materials. The Copyright Act requires that people who use or make reference to the work of others must follow a set of guidelines designed to protect authors’ rights. The complexities of copyright law in no way excuse users from following these rules. The safest practice is to refrain from distributing works used in class (whether distributed by the professor or used for research) because they are likely copyright-protected, and to cite any research or creative work you use in your classwork according to Turabian or other standard style-guide for the humanities. • Intellectual Property: All lectures, notes, homework templates, and other instructional materials in this class are the intellectual property of the professor. As a result, they may not be distributed or shared in any manner, either on paper or virtually, without my written permission. Lectures may not be recorded without my written consent; when consent is given, those recordings may be used for review only and may not be distributed. Recognizing that your work, too, is your intellectual property, I will not share or distribute your work without your written permission.
