Policies and Assessment


Grades will be based on:

Participation (the value you add to everyone's learning: neither mere physical presence nor only proficiency in oral performance, but also thoughtful questions and clarifying contributions to discussion by the whole class)
Penalty for excessive absences
10%

the Participation component will have 2.5% deducted for each absence falling within the definition of excess (see below)
Graded written homework 15% (cumulative average)
Microquizzes   2.5% (cumulative average)
Short quizzes 22.5% (cumulative average)
Midterm exam 22.5%
Final exam 27.5%
The "midterm grade" will reflect the weighted average, pro-rated, of the components completed to date: participation, homework, microquizzes, and quizzes to date, and the midterm exam.
